Driver Arrested After Crash Kills Scooter Rider in East Austin

A driver was arrested on a DWI charge Friday morning after hitting and killing a scooter rider in East Austin.

Details of the Austin Scooter Accident

According to KXAN, the crash occurred on East Seventh Street between Allen Street and Gunter Street around 2:30 am.

The driver remained at the scene after the accident and was determined to be intoxicated. They were booked on a DWI charge.

Traffic was closed on East Seventh Street after the crash, but lanes re-opened around 6:00 am.

The crash remains under investigation.

CDC Finds Austin Scooter Riders Have High Serious Injury Rate

In 2019, the CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service reviewed medical records of people who had used emergency services for injuries related to electric scooters. The records reviewed were from September 5, 2018 through November 30, 2018.

  • About half of the records reviewed involved people who suffered serious injuries.
  • Half had reported surface conditions like potholes and cracks in the street may have contributed to their injuries.
  • About two-thirds indicated they would not ride an electric scooter again.
