High School Student Dies at Florida Football Camp
A 14-year-old boy died at a Camp Blanding, Florida football camp on Wednesday after exhibiting symptoms of heat stroke.
Authorities Investigate Boy’s Death
According to Reuters, authorities in Florida have launched an investigation into the death of William Shogran Jr. of Sebastrian River High School.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office states that Shogran walked to the sidelines during the first full day of a pre-season football camp, complaining of dizziness before vomiting and collapsing.
By the time emergency crews arrived, Shogran was unresponsive. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.
The case has sense been turned over to the Clay County Sheriff’s Department’s homicide investigator.
Shogran Third High School Student to Die During Pre-Season Practices
Shogran’s death marks the third pre-season practice fatality to be recorded this year. Earlier this year a Pennsylvania student died in connection with a benign tumor on his heart, and a second student from Georgia died after drinking excessive amounts of water and Gatorade.
The national Weather Service state the temperature at the camp would have been in the mid-to-low 80s, but, due to high humidity, the heat index would have reached the mid-90s.
The U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention states that football players are much more likely to suffer heat illnesses than other athletes.
