Heading to a concert or music festival is an exciting adventure—whether you’re grooving to your favorite band, discovering new artists, or just soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. But amidst all the fun, it’s important to keep safety top of mind. After all, the best memories are made when everyone is safe, sound, and having a blast!

We’ll walk you through key safety tips to ensure you enjoy every beat without missing a step. From transportation to hydration, these tips will help you stay protected and make the most of your festival or concert experience.

Plan Your Arrival and Departure

Whether you’re driving, taking public transit, or using a rideshare service, make sure to pick a safe and reliable mode of transportation. Avoid driving if you plan on drinking, and always double-check your ride-sharing app to confirm your driver’s details before getting in. If you’re attending with a group, assign a designated driver who won’t be drinking, or plan for a rideshare service to pick you up after the event.

Also, plan to arrive early. It not only gives you time to beat the crowds, but also helps you get acquainted with the venue’s layout. Locate key areas like bathrooms, food stalls, emergency exits, and the first aid stations so you’re prepared if anything unexpected happens.

Stay Hydrated and Nourished

A concert or music festival can be an all-day event, with plenty of dancing, excitement, and crowd energy. To keep up with the action, it’s essential to stay hydrated and nourished.

It’s easy to forget about hydration when you’re having a blast, but water is key to keeping your energy up and avoiding dehydration. With all the activity and possible sun exposure, you can easily lose fluids. Make it a habit to sip water throughout the day. Carry a reusable water bottle if the venue allows it and refill it at water stations. This ensures you stay refreshed and helps avoid headaches, fatigue, or dizziness.

Festivals often involve long hours with little downtime, so packing snacks is a smart move. If possible, try non-perishable, energy-boosting items like trail mix, granola bars, or protein bars to keep your body fueled. These quick bites can be lifesavers when you’re feeling low on energy between sets or waiting in long lines for food.

However, keep in mind that certain venues do not allow outside food, so it’s important to take note of where food and drink vendors are located. This will save you time when you’re craving a snack or need a beverage. Be sure to also check for water refill stations.

Use the Buddy System

Attending events with friends or in a group can make it more fun and ensures that you have someone to rely on in case something unexpected happens. It’s also a good idea to stay close to your group throughout the event, so everyone stays together and can help each other out if needed.

Before the event starts, pick a clear, easy-to-find meeting point in case you get separated. This could be near a landmark, a designated area in the venue, or outside near the entrance. Make sure everyone in your group knows the meeting spot and what to do if you can’t reach each other via phone.

Keep your phones charged and communicate regularly, especially if the venue is large or crowded. You can set specific times to check in or use messaging apps to stay connected throughout the day.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Upon arrival, take note of all the emergency exits in the venue. These are often clearly marked, and knowing their locations can help you react quickly in case of an emergency. Also be sure to locate the first aid stations or ask staff where they are in case your or someone else needs medical attention.

Pay attention to the people around you, especially in crowded or unfamiliar settings. If someone seems to be acting suspicious or overly aggressive, alert event staff or security right away. If something feels off, trust your instincts. It’s always better to be cautious and make your way to a safer area to contact security.

If the event is large and the crowds are dense, try to avoid areas where people are packed in too tightly. Not only is it less comfortable, but it can make it harder to move if you need to exit quickly. If you need to be in a crowded area, try to stand near exits or open spaces, where you can move freely in case you need to leave quickly.

Protect Your Belongings

Try to use bags that zip or close securely like a crossbody or a fanny pack that you can keep close to your body. Keep the number of valuables you bring to a minimum. Leave expensive jewelry, designer items, or large sums of cash at home.

A phone strap or a secure phone pocket is a great way to keep your phone on you at all times. It makes it easier to access but hard to lose. If your bag doesn’t have a secure place for your phone, a wrist strap or lanyard can help you keep it within arm’s reach without the worry of dropping it or leaving it behind.
