Motorcyclist Struck and Killed by Motorist Pulling a U-turn

According to the Times-Call News, an elderly man on a motorcycle died after being hit by a car in Longmont, Colorado, on Sunday afternoon.

Details of Fatal Motorcycle Crash

A 66-year-old man was riding his motorcycle south on Main Street near Tenacity Drive when the accident occurred. The motorcyclist was struck by an SUV that attempted a U-turn in front of him at around 2:00 p.m. local time.

The motorcyclist was taken to Longmont United Hospital for treatment, reports the Times-Call News. Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The Times-Call News reports that the driver of the SUV was a 65-year-old woman. Although the accident remains under investigation, drugs, alcohol, and speeding are not suspected to have played a role in the fatal accident. The identities of the driver and deceased motorcyclist have not yet been released by officials.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 4,295 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2014. Here is additional information regarding motorcycle crashes:

  • Helmets are about 37 percent effective in preventing motorcycle deaths and about 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries.
  • Only 19 states and the District of Columbia require helmet use by all riders.
  • 30 percent of motorcyclists killed in 2014 were under the age of 30.
