Motorcyclists Killed in Odessa Accident
Wednesday night, a man was killed in a motorcycle accident in Odessa, Texas.
Details of the Fatal Accident
The accident occurred on FM 1882 around 9 p.m. Department of Public Safety Troopers shared with NewsWest9 that a large rig was turning onto FM 1882 and did not yield the right of way to a motorcycle driving northbound.
The motorcyclist subsequently crashed into the trailer of the rig. Jason Givens was the man operating the motorcycle – he was reported to be 41-years-old.
Givens was not wearing a helmet and died in the accident.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics
The following information was provided by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:
- In 2013, 4,381 deaths resulted from motorcycle accidents.
- Helmets are 67 percent effective in preventing motorcycle accident related brain injuries.
- Helmets are 37 percent effective in preventing motorcycle deaths.
- Motorcycle deaths made up 13 percent of all motor vehicle related deaths in 2013, which was more than twice the amount recorded in 1997.
