NJ Transit Faces $1M Settlement
A $1 million settlement is pending approval by the NJ Transit after a Jersey City bus collided with a Hudson County Correctional Facility van on Pavonia Avenue, causing serious injury to both officers in the vehicle.
About the Jersey City Bus Accident
According to the Associated Press (AP), NJ Transit employee, Miguel A. Castro, was headed westbound on Pavonia Avenue in a city bus when he attempted to dodge a double parked car by crossing into a lane of oncoming traffic.
As Castro failed to return to his lane during the attempt, the bus interfered with the path a Hudson County corrections van holding two officers, Gary Good and Julio Camacho. The van collided with the back of the bus, injuring both passengers. This accident occurred on March 19, 2013.
Good and Camacho both suffered moderate to severe injuries. Both endured multiple surgeries and remain unable to return to work. Although he remains employed by NJ Transit, Castro has been cited with failure to stay in designated lane and fleeing the scene of the accident.
About the NJ Transit Settlement
The NJ Transit board is facing a $1 million settlement agreement after two Hudson County correctional officers were injured after colliding with a city bus in Jersey City.
The initial settlement was originally valued at $2.25 million but was lowered to $1 million after pre-trial legal negotiation. If the settlement is approved by NJ Transit board members, injured officers Gary Good and Julio Camacho will receive $500,000 each to cover medical costs and appease missed work.
Neither Good nor Camacho have returned to work since the accident due to extensive injury and recovery. Both are collecting short-term disability at this time.
