Details of the Fatal Accident
The victim, 40-year-old Kenneth W. Crossland, from Clayton, Oklahoma was killed while driving his 2001 Toyota Tundra Tuesday morning.
Kenneth Crossland died during the crash, but the driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.
Statistics about Wrong-Way Collisions
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), nearly 360 lives are lost each year in about 260 fatal wrong-way collision in the United States.
The report that was done by the National Transportation Safety Board specifically focused on wrong-way accidents occurring in California, Kentucky, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin, Nevada, and Virginia.
The study found that over 80% of wrong-way collisions occur at high speeds which leads to an increase in more serious injuries and fatalities such as the accident in Loving County. Although the speed of the driver is unknown, the driver was travelling on the interstate – possibly indication of a high speed of travel and an increase in the chances of a fatality in the event of a wrong-way accident.
