One Dead, One Injured in Jacksonville Construction Accident

One worker is dead and another is in critical condition after the two fell three stories at a Jacksonville construction site.

Details of the Jacksonville Construction Accident

According to The Florida Times-Union, the fatal accident occurred at the Mary Eaves apartment complex in the 1200 block of West 16th Street, near Myrtle Avenue.

The men were reportedly working out of a wooden crate perched atop a hydraulic lift when the crate tipped over. It is unclear if the workers were strapped into harnesses.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene while the other was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be conducting an investigation into the accident.

Construction Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

  • 4,836 workers were killed on the job in 2015. This averages to more than 93 deaths a week or more than 13 deaths every day.
  • Of the 4,379 worker fatalities that occurred in private industry, 937 were associated with construction.
  • The leading causes of construction-related deaths are:
    • Falls
    • Struck by object
    • Electrocutions
    • Caught-In/Between
