According to police statistics, San Antonio has already seen a sharp increase in fatal pedestrian accidents with 29 incidents being reported between January and August.
Even more alarming, San Antonio has already reported more bicycle deaths than last year with 5 bicyclist fatalities being reported between January and August.
Harsher Penalties Facing Texas Drivers
In an effort to combat rising hit and runs, pedestrian accidents, and bicyclist accidents across the state, Texans will be subjected to stricter penalties for certain traffic violations beginning September 1, 2013.
Tougher penalties will result from using a phone in a school zone, running school bus stop signs, hit and runs and failing to move over to allow emergency vehicles to pass and Department of Transportation vehicles.
Leaving the scene of an accident (hit and run) will now carry a penalty comparable to that of intoxicated driving. This change was put into effect after it was found many drunk drivers would attempt to flee from an accident as being hit and run charges carried less weight than driving while intoxicated.
Failure to move aside for emergency vehicles will now carry a fine of up to $2000.
San Antonio police have already begun to take to the streets on bikes in order to enforce the three foot law which requires cars to maintain a distance of at least three feet when passing bicyclists.
