Details about the Racing Accident

News 4 San Antonio is reporting that a San Antonio teenager is fighting for his life in the hospital after a racing accident in San Antonio on the city’s south side.

According to police, the accident happened at about 11:40 p.m. on Tuesday night on Applewhite Road. Police have further said that the teenager who was hurt was in the passenger seat of the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Police say that the teens were on a road that was under construction in the back of a mobile home park, where streets are being paved for new homes that are going up.

A 19-year-old man was in the passenger seat of a car that was racing. According to police, the man was not properly buckled in when the car made a left turn and the passenger door flew open. The man attempted to grab the door but fell out of the vehicle, hitting the back of his head on the pavement of the street.

The driver of the vehicle took off from the scene of the accident, parked the car, and left the 19-year-old in the street with some others who were there as they waited for emergency crews to arrive.

The teenager was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.

Important Information about Speeding

According to Teens in the Driver Seat, wrongful deaths happen all the time in the United States involving speeding and teen drivers:

  • Nearly 33 percent of young drivers and passenger fatalities involving teenagers happen in speed-related accidents.
  • An increase in speed increases the stopping distance to brake your vehicle.
  • Teenagers are more likely than adult drivers to speed and have a shorter following distance – the presence of male passengers in vehicles also increases the likelihood of risky behaviors of teenage male drivers.
