Veteran’s Memorial Mourns Loss of Asst. Band Director
Veteran’s Memorial High School is mourning the loss of Assistant Band Director Jesus Lopez who was killed in an auto accident in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Tuesday night.
About the Fatal Car Accident
According to KZTV, Lopez was killed when his vehicle was struck by a pickup on Cimarron in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Preliminary reports suggest driver of the red pickup fell asleep before colliding with Lopez’s vehicle, which was parked near the high school. The intensity of the crash caused Lopez’s car to wedge between some trees.
The driver of the truck did not suffer any serious injuries. Authorities are investigating the accident.

The following information was provided by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS):
- In 2013, the Texas population of 26,448,193 experienced 3,044 fatal crashes and 3,382 deaths.
- In the U.S. there were 30,057 fatal motor vehicle crashes in which 32,719 deaths occurred.
- This averages to a national vehicle death rate of 10.3 deaths per 100,000 people.
- About 57 percent of motor vehicle deaths happened in single-vehicle crashes.
