Worker Dies After Greenville Go. Construction Accident


A construction worker died Tuesday after being involved in an accident at a Greenville County, South Carolina jobsite.
Details of the Fatal Construction Accident
WSPA reports that 64-year-old Leonico Quijada was initially injured on February 1st when he was struck by pulley used to raise and lower pallets to different levels of scaffolding. The pulley fell and hit Quijada on the head.
Quijada was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment, but was pronounced dead on Tuesday, February 14th.
The accident remains under investigation. It is still unclear how the pulley came loose.
Construction Accident Statistics
The following information was provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):
- 4,836 workers were killed on the job in 2015. This averages to more than 93 deaths per week or more than 13 deaths each day.
- Of the fatalities reported, 4,379 occurred in the private industry and 937 were in construction.
- Among the leading causes of death in the workplace were:
- Falls
- Electrocutions
- Struck by object
