Benlysta (belimumab) is a pharmaceutical medication prescribed to treat adults with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who are receiving standard therapy. Benlysta has been linked to serious adverse events including infections, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), heart problems, metal health problems, and suicide.
Benlysta Lupus Medication Severe Side-Effects and Injuries
Benlysta works by inhibiting B-cells from activating the over-aggressive immune response characterized in SLE. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011, Benlysta is marketed by GlaxoSmithKline. Benlysta is administered intravenously.
Common side effects associated with Benlysta include:
- Runny nose

Benlysta is also associated with several serious side effects that could cause life-changing injuries and even death.
- Fever chills
- Pain or burning with urination
- Urinating often
- Coughing up mucus
- Red or painful skin sores
- Heart problems
- Chest discomfort or pain
- Shortness of breath
- Cold sweats
- Mental health problems and suicide
- Thoughts of suicide or dying
- Attempts to commit suicide
- New or worse anxiety and depression
- Unusual changes in mood or behavior
Because Benlysta affects the immune system, patients taking the dangerous drug may be put at an increased risk of developing certain cancers as well.
Benlysta and Brain Infections
Benlysta can cause progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). PML is a serious and life-threatening brain infection that can become more common when patients take medicines that weaken the immune system. This condition can cause severe disability and death. Signs and symptoms of PML include:
- Memory loss
- Trouble thinking
- Dizziness or loss of balance
- Loss of vision
- Difficulty walking or talking
Benlysta Clinical Trials Reveal Increased Risk of Psychiatric Events, Death
In the controlled clinical trials, psychiatric events were more reported more frequently with Benlysta than a placebo. In addition, more patients receiving Benlysta in the main clinical trials died than did patients receiving the placebo treatment. A total of 14 patients died out of the three clinical trials.
