A 21-year-old Texas State University student killed a man and injured his pregnant wife in a drunk driving crash on Tuesday.

About the Drunk Driving Crash

According to the San Antonio Express-News, 21-year-old Shana Lee Elliott allegedly crossed the center line on Highway 21 and collided with a Toyota Corolla carrying Fabian Guerrero-Moreno and his wife Kristian Nicole Guerrero. Kristian is five-months-pregnant. The accident occurred around 6 pm Tuesday.

Fabian died at the scene, and Kristian was taken to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center for treatment. Kristian was listed in serious condition and her unborn child is not expected to survive. Elliot was treated for minor injuries.

Elliot admitted to police that she had been drinking while floating along a nearby river earlier Tuesday and according to an affidavit, a witness claimed to see “a female in a bikini” roll a bottle of alcohol under a vehicle. Elliot has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault.

The public relations and mass communications senior reportedly had previous run-ins with the law, including a March arrest on three charges of possession of controlled substances and marijuana. She was also arrested in May on two more charges of possession of controlled substances.

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • 3,534 people were killed in auto accident in Texas in 2014 – a 3.7-percent increase from the 3,408 deaths reported in 2013.
  • 1,041 of those deaths, or 29 percent, were attributed to collisions in which a driver was under the influence of alcohol.
  • Alcohol-related crashes were most prevalent between 2:00-2:59 am and occurred most often on Saturdays.
