Austin Officer Injured in Motorcycle Accident

According to reports from KXAN, an Austin police officer was involved in an motorcycle accident on Wednesday morning. The accident in Austin occurred near the intersection of Wells Branch Parkway and Single Trace.

Details of the Austin Motorcycle Accident

A Travis County Sheriff’s motorcycle deputy was in pursuit of a traffic law violator when a car cut in front of him on his motorcycle. The motorcycle went into a slide and the officer hit the curb. The officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at a nearby hospital. The motorcycle had considerable damage.  The driver of the car stayed on the scene after the accident until paramedics arrived. It is not clear if the driver will receive a citation for their role in the accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2012:

  • Approximately 93,000 motorcyclists were injured and about 4,957 motorcyclists killed in traffic accidents.
  • Between 2011 and 2012, motorcycle injuries increased by 15 percent, and motorcycle fatalities increased by 7 percent.
  • That year, motorcycle fatalities represented 15 percent of all traffic-related deaths.
  • About 52 percent of all motorcycle fatalities involved a motorcyclist colliding with another vehicle.
