Austin Woman Seriously Injured After Being Struck by a Car While Riding a Scooter

A 26-year-old woman was seriously injured in downtown Austin on Friday, March 17, when she was struck by a vehicle while riding a scooter.

Despite Details Provided by Victim, APD States They Are Not Investing Incident as Hit-and-run

According to FOX 7 Austin, Yaneisy Lua, 26, was left seriously injured without aid after a driver struck her as she was riding an electric scooter. The driver in question did not remain at the scene.

Fortunately, Yaneisy was able to contact her sister, Mariana, via the SOS feature and inform her that she had been struck by a vehicle. A passerby also stopped to help Yaneisy.

However, upon arriving at the scene, Mariana was informed by a responding officer that she fell off the scooter, despite her sister telling her she was hit by a car. As such, no report was filed by the responding officer.

Upon arriving at the hospital, it was determined that Yaneisy suffered from injuries to her liver, internal bleeding, and injuries to her face, neck, and arm. It was also noted by the hospital, EMS, and paramedics that Yanesiy’s injuries were caused by a car accident.

Eventually, the Tuesday after the crash, a second officer was sent to the hospital to take a report, but the family is upset about the possible loss of information that occurred from a report not being filed immediately after the incident.

Upon contacting APD, FOX 7 was told police are not investigating the incident as a crash or hit-and-run.

Yaneisy was released from the ICU on Tuesday.

  • Half had reported surface conditions like potholes and cracks in the street may have contributed to their injuries.
  • About two-thirds indicated they would not ride an electric scooter again.

Injuries commonly reported in scooter accidents:
