The crash occurred at 7:30 p.m. near Pleasant Valley Road and Chester Way in Vacaville, CA. Reports from California Highway Patrol (CHP) say the five teens were ejected from a truck that had lost control and rolled over into a field. None of the victims were wearing seat belts. CHP has said alcohol and speed are suspected factors.
The two fatalities have been identified as Gilbert Guzman, 20 and Christie Brinsley, 16. The truck involved in the crash belonged to Guzman, although it is uncertain if he was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Police say the teens were returning from Lake Berryessa when the accident happened.
California Seat Belt Statistics
The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) estimated seat belt usage at 96.6% in 2011 resulted in an estimated 1,243 lives saved in the state of California. Of the 483 motor vehicle fatalities involved unrestrained occupants, the OTS estimates half would have been saved by seat belts.
