Purdue Pharma Sued Over Opioid Profiting

Litigation was recently announced against various opioid manufacturers and distributors, including Purdue Pharmaceuticals.

About the Opioid Lawsuit

According to Kusi News, the San Diego city attorney announced a federal lawsuit against several opioid manufacturers, including Purdue Pharma, and several opioid distributors, for profiting from and exacerbating the country’s opioid crisis.

The suit is intended to force the companies to fund rehabilitation and drug education programs in response to opioid abuse in the city. Further legal action is to be initiated against the Sackler family, owners of Purdue Pharma, for violation of the RICO Act.

Opioid named in the suit include AmerisourceBergen Corporation, Cardinal Health Inc., and the McKesson Corporation.

Information on the Opioid Crisis

  • According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, more than 130 people die each day due to opioid overdose.
  • Between 21 and 29 percent of patients prescribed opioids for chronic pain misuse them.
  • Around 80 percent of heroin users first misused prescription opioids.
  • In 45 states, opioid overdoses increased 30 percent from July 2016 to September 2017.
