Longhorns’ Co-Defensive Coordinator Arrested After Austin Drunk Driving Crash

The Texas Longhorns’ co-defensive coordinator, Johnny Nansen, was charged with DWI after a three-vehicle crash Wednesday night.

Details of the Austin Drunk Driving Crash and Arrest

According to KVUE, the Austin Police Department (ADP) responded to a crash in the 700 block of South Capital of Texas Highway at around 9 PM.

Police noted Nansen showed “signs consistent with possible impairment” and conducted a field sobriety test. They found “multiple clues of impairment” and arrested Nansen for DWI, a Class B misdemeanor.

Nansen was booked into jail at 11:30 PM Wednesday before he was released on a personal recognizance bond at 7:47 AM Thursday.

The crash remains under investigation.

Texas Drunk Driving Statistics

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • 3,769 people were killed in car crashes in Texas in 2025, marking a 9.38% decrease from the 4,159 deaths reported in 2024.
  • 906 people were killed in crashes where at least one driver was under the influence of alcohol. This accounts for 24.04% of all Texas traffic fatalities.
  • Drunk driving crashes were more likely to occur between 2:00 AM and 2:59 AM than any other hour of the day.
  • An additional 244,534 people were injured in traffic crashes in 2025, with 17,420 people suffering a serious injury.
