Man Changing Flat Tire Killed by Distracted Driver
According to News 4 SA, a man was changing a flat tire on his car was fatally injured when he was hit by a distracted driver in San Antonio.
Police Unsure of what Distracted the Driver
Police say Irven Cooper, III, a 68-year-old man, was in the process of changing the flat tire on his car along a busy stretch of General Hudnell Dr. south of Highway 90 when the fatal pedestrian accident occurred around 9:30 a.m.
According to News 4 SA, police claim the driver who hit Cooper was distracted, but they were not clear on what caused her distraction.
Information on Distracted Driving
The following information on distracted driving is provided by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA).
- In 2013, 3,154 people were killed, and 424,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers.
- Ten percent of fatal crashes, 18 percent of injury crashes, and 16 percent of all police-reported motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2013 were reported as distraction-affected crashes.
- An estimated 34,000 people were injured in 2013 in crashes involving cell phone use or other cell phone-related activities.
- 384 pedestrians were killed in 2013 in distraction-affected crashes.
