San Antonio Police Responded to More Than 1,300 Crashes During Winter Blast
As of Wednesday night, San Antonio police had responded to 1, 366 crash calls during the winter storms that hit the city last week.
Snow and Ice Cause Spike in San Antonio Traffic Accidents
As San Antonio struggled with freezing temperatures last week, police were responding to a wave of traffic accident calls throughout the city.
In total, police had responded to 1,366 crash calls by Wednesday evening. SAPD was also working to clear the roadway of crashed and abandoned vehicles left on city highways. At least one abandoned vehicle played a role in a fatal 18-wheeler accident that left a truck driver dead.
KSAT reports that officials opted to keep at-risk ramps and roadways closed, but traffic remained open on many other iced-over roads, overpasses, and bridges.
Conditions have since cleared up with warmer, sunny weather over the weekend, but drivers were urged to remain cautious as the snow and ice melted away.
2019 San Antonio Car Accident Statistics
The following information was acquired from the TxDOT Crash Database:
- 43, 668 car accidents were recorded in San Antonio in 2019, up from 43,158 in 2018.
- 117 fatal traffic accidents were reported in the city, marking a slight increase from the 115 fatal crashes reported in 2018.
- Distracted driving was determined to play a role in 20,883 of the crashes reported to TxDOT with 30 fatal collisions being blamed on distracted drivers.
