Two children, ages 6 and 9, are dead because of a two-car collision in southeast Austin. Authorities are still working to determine the cause of the fatal crash.

About the Fatal Southeast Austin Crash

According to KVUE, the fatal crash occurred on Wednesday, September 9, near the intersection of South Interstate 35 and East State Highway 71 at around 7:41 a.m.

Police say the collision involved a Jeep Compass that was traveling northbound on I-35 and a Tesla that was traveling west along the East Ben White Boulevard service road. The Jeep was carrying a driver and two children while the Tesla was only occupied by its driver.

It is unclear what led to the crash, but all four individuals were rushed to the hospital.

One of the children, 9-year-old Liliana Segura, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving to the hospital. Her sister, 6-year-old Abigail Segura, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, September 15.

Liliana and Abigail mark Austin’s 59th and 60th traffic fatalities for the year.

An investigation is still underway, but APD has disclosed that neither driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
