One Dead, Two Hospitalized Following Schertz Car Accident
A pedestrian was killed and two people were injured in a chain-reaction crash in Schertz, Texas.
Details of the Fatal Schertz Car Accident
According to KSAT, the crash occurred around 5:11 am Sunday in the 17600 block of IH-35 North.
Early reports suggest the accident began when a dark-colored SUV was traveling northbound on IH-35 struck a pedestrian that was attempting to cross the highway. A Suzuki SUV that was also traveling northbound tried to avoid hitting the pedestrian, but failed.
In its attempts to avoid the pedestrian, the Suzuki SUV lost control and rolled over. The dark-colored SUV that initially struck the pedestrian fled the scene.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and the passenger of the SUV were transported to the hospital. Their condition was not immediately available.
Police say alcohol is not a factor in the crash, but did say the driver that fled the scene will likely face charges once they are located.

The AAA Foundation of Traffic Safety reports that the number of hit-and-run deaths increased by 60 percent between 2009 and 2016, reaching a record high on 2,049 deaths in 2016.
Based on that data, the AAA Foundation of Traffic Safety deduced that a hit-and-run crash occurs every minute in the United States.
Nearly 65 percent of all people killed in hit-and-run collisions are pedestrians and bicyclists, and 20 percent of all pedestrian deaths were caused by hit-and-run crashes.
Per capita, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Florida had the highest rates of fatal hit-and-run crashes while New Hampshire, Main, and Minnesota had the lowest rates.
