Child Dies in Fayette County 4-Wheeler Accident
A nine-year-old child was killed in a 4-wheeler accident in Texas last week, according to KXAN.
About the Fatal Accident
Caleb Heger was driving a 4-wheeler on Lidiak Road east of Radhost School Road around 12:41 p.m. – a route that he frequently traveled. According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, he went down a steep embankment near the creek and he crashed.
Fayette County EMS, Medics, and the Schulenburg Fire Department were called to the scene. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office say Caleb was transferred to St. Marks’ Hospital to treat his injuries.
He later died at the hospital.
Information on ATV Related Deaths in Texas
According to a 2014 report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):
- Nationwide, Texas has the highest number of reported ATV deaths. From 2012 to 2014 there were 89 ATV-related deaths in Texas.
- There were 13,617 ATV-related deaths from 1982 to 2014. Of the total ATV or all-terrain vehicle fatalities, 43 percent, or 1,342 deaths, were children under 12 years old.
- In 2014, there were an estimated 93,700 ATV-related, emergency department-treated injuries in the United States. An estimated 26 percent of these involved children younger than 16 years of age.
