Man Loses Life in Benavides Accident
Authorities in Benavides, Texas responded to the scene of an accident late Saturday to find the incident had left one person dead.
Details of the Benavides Accident
KIII-TV reports Rene Mario Pena, 69, of Hebbronville, lost his life in a fatal car accident that occurred outside of Benavides Saturday evening.
The accident report indicates that Pena was driving a truck that trailed off of Highway 359 and then came back onto the highway, only before the truck crossed two lanes and collide with a tree.
Authorities responded to the scene to find Pena unconscious and unresponsive – he was pronounced dead by the Justice of the Peace.
The investigation is still underway.
Texas Auto Accident Statistics
The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):
- 3,408 people were killed in auto accidents in Texas in 2013 – a .25-percent decrease from the 3,417 deaths recorded in 2012.
- More than 55 percent of those fatal accidents occurred in rural areas of the state and nearly 40 percent were the result of single vehicle accidents.
- An additional 232,599 people were injured in auto accidents in 2013 with 16,807 people sustaining serious injuries.
- TxDOT estimates a reportable crash occurred every 71 seconds in Texas in 2013.
