MINI Cooper Issues Recall – Air Bag Deployment Failure

Patrick Murray4 years ago

BMW and MINI are issuing a recall of several models due to a failure to deploy the passenger side air bags.

About the MINI/BMW Air Bag Recall

Reports indicate the recall covers over 6,000 cars and came about after Takata, the producer of the air bags, contacted BMW about a possible problem with the front passenger airbags, causing BMW to investigate the problem. The issue has been identified as a time delay in the disposal ignition of the second stage of the passenger side airbags caused by a manufacturing error.

BMW explained that the air bags open up in stages depending on the speed and severity of the crash. The recall is being issued because at low speeds (when the air bag deploys in the first stage only) the passenger-side air bags may not be fully protected.

BMW claims that there have been no accidents or injuries related to the defective airbags. The recall begins on November 20th. Dealers will have to replace the front passenger-side airbag modules, taking at least three hours to repair.
