Toyota Issues Massive Recall for RAV4 SUVs Due to Battery Defect

Toyota has issued a recall for 1,854,000 Toyota RAV4 SUVs equipped with defective battery issues that could pose a potential fire hazard.

About the Toyota RAV4 Defective Battery Recall

According to USA Today, Toyota is recalling the certain RAV4 SUV models due to a fire risk caused by improperly installed replacement batteries.

The issue stems from some replacement batteries having smaller top dimensions than others. If a battery with smaller dimensions is installed and the hold-down clamp is not tightened correctly, the battery may move during forceful turns, potentially causing the positive battery terminal to contact the hold-down clamp and trigger a short circuit.

The recall deals specifically with Toyota RAV4 2013 through 2018 model years.

To address this issue, Toyota is working on a remedy that will replace the battery clamp sub-assembly, battery tray, and positive terminal cover at no cost to owners. Affected vehicle owners will be notified by mail by the end of the year.

What You Need to Do If You Own an Affected RAV4 SUV:

  1. Check if your vehicle is affected by visiting Toyota’s recall website or calling the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
  2. If your vehicle is affected, schedule an appointment with a Toyota dealership to have the repairs done.
  3. In the meantime, avoid making sharp turns or driving in rough conditions to minimize the risk of a fire.
