Fellows, 59, died when his vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle on Highway 200 on his trip home to Missoula after a campaign event in Seeley Lake. According to several media outlets, Fellows’ car crossed the highway center line and slammed into an oncoming vehicle.
Fellows was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the other car was transported to a hospital with unknown injuries.
The Libertarian Party chairman was making his eighth run for Montana’s House of Representatives seat, according to several media sources.
According to David Merrick, chairman of the Ravalli County Libertarian Party, Fellows has been involved with the state’s Libertarian Party since 1982 and has run for statewide office in every election since 1998.
Merrick said Fellows had been in poor health due to his kidneys and was urged not to take part in the debate. According to media outlets, it is unclear whether his poor health played a role in the fatal car crash.
