Amazon Recalls 260,000 Portable Battery Chargers

Amazon has issued a recall for roughly 260,000 AmazonBasics portable battery chargers after determining the products pose potential fire and chemical burn hazards to consumers.

Details of the Amazon Battery Charger Recall

According to the Wall Street Journal, the battery in the power banks can overheat and ignite, resulting in fire and burn hazards.

Amazon has received 53 reports of power banks overheating, including one incident of chemical burns and four incidents of property damage.

Consumers should unplug the chargers and stop using them immediately. Purchasers may contact Amazon to inquire about returns and refunds; otherwise, Amazon will be contacting purchasers directly.

Product Included in the Amazon Portable Battery Charger Recall

The recall affects six versions of the AmazonBasics portable lithium-ion battery charges with the following product ID numbers:

  • B00LRK8HJ8
  • B00LRK8I7O
  • B00LRK8IV0
  • B00LRK8JDC
  • B00ZQ4JQAA

ID numbers can be found printed on the back of the products.

Affected units were sold through Amazon.com, Amazon Bookstores, and Amazon Pop-Up Stores from December 2014 through July 2017 for between $9 and $40.
