Beaumont Bus Driver Cited in School Bus Accident

Police say a Beaumont ISD bus driver is responsible for a crash that sent 23 students and two adults to the hospital earlier this month.

Details of the Beaumont ISD School Bus Crash

According to KFDM, the crash occurred April 5 when the school bus cross into oncoming traffic on U.S. 69 in Lumberton. The bus then crashed into a tractor-trailer and a pickup before hitting a culvert and landing in a ditch.

Details on the injuries sustained by those involved in the crash are limited, but 23 students and two adults were transported to area hospitals and at least one teach and one teacher were hospitalized overnight following the crash.

Police have cited the bus driver, Michelle Lewis, for failure to control speed leading up to the crash. T is unclear if additional charges will be brought.

  • Nonoccupants, including pedestrians, bicyclists, etc., accounted for 21 percent of the fatalities.
  • Among the 106 occupants killed in school transportation vehicles between 2004 and 2013, 45 were drivers and 61 were passengers.
