Dozens Injured In Lincoln Tunnel Collision


According to CBS Local, in Weehawken, New Jersey a collision occurred between two NJ TRANSIT buses on September 26th, 2016. The collision resulted in a minimum of 44 people being injured.

Details of the Bus Collision

The collision occurred around 8:40 A.M. in the center tube. A 127 Line bus was headed from Ridgefield and rear-ended a 128 Line bus around Fairview.

The officials investigating the collision said the driver of the first bus switched lanes very suddenly and the driver of the other bus didn’t have an adequate amount of time to stop.

The bus driver at fault was issued tickets for an unsafe lane change, making an improper lane change, and careless driving.

The door on one of the buses had to be cut open to assist the injured. Of the 44 injuries reported, 41 were minor and 3 were more serious.

Road Crash Statistics

The following information was provided by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA):

  • 3,978 large trucks and buses were involved in fatal accidents in 2014.
  • From 2009 to 2014, the number of injury crashes involving large trucks and buses increased by 55 percent.
  • During that time, school buses accounted for 41 percent of all fatal crashes. Transit buses accounted for 33 percent and intercity buses accounted for 13 percent.
