Montgomery ISD Remembers Teacher Killed in Tragic Accident

A group of 4th graders released more than 40 balloons Thursday in remembrance of Jennifer Runnels, a Lone Star Elementary teacher who was killed in a head-on collision Wednesday afternoon.

About the Fatal Head-On Collision

According to ABC 13, the accident occurred near Honea Egypt Road just outside of Montgomery.

DPS reports indicate the driver of another vehicle, Floyd Nelms, was traveling westbound on FM 2854 when he struck a vehicle carrying Runnels and her 10-year-old daughter.

Nelms was killed in the accident and Runnels died shortly after being transported to Conroe Regional Hospital. Runnels’ daughter was airlifted to Texas Children’s Hospital where she remains listed in critical condition.

Authorities are trying to determine what caused Nelms to drift into oncoming traffic. An autopsy has been ordered.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • 3,531 people were killed in auto accidents in Texas in 2015 – an average of one death every 2 hours and 29 minutes.
  • 1,925 of those deaths were attributed to crashes that occurred in rural areas of the state, and 581 deaths were the result of head-on collisions.
  • An additional 246,335 people were injured in traffic accidents in Texas in 2015 with 17,011 people suffering serious injuries.
  • On average, a reportable crash occurred every 61 seconds in 2015.
