One Dead in Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving School Bus, 18-Wheeler

According to KY3, a chain reaction of crashes involving a semi-truck and a school bus left one man dead and several injured on Interstate 70 west of Indianapolis on Friday afternoon.

Details of the Fatal Crash

The crash occurred around 1:00 p.m. local time when the school bus slowed down for traffic caused by an earlier accident. The bus carried kids traveling home from the national FFA conference.

A semi-truck crashed into the bus, which caused another crash involving a box truck. According to KY3, seven of the students on the bus sustained injuries and received treatment at a hospital. Three adults among the involved vehicles also received treatment at a hospital.

A passenger in the box truck involved in the wreck died, according to KY3. The superintendent of the school district believes the other injuries sustained in the series of crashes aren’t life threatening.

  • In 2014, 3,903 people died and an estimated 111,000 people sustained injuries in crashes involving large trucks.
  • Of these fatalities in 2014, 73% were occupants of other vehicles.
  • From 2013 to 2014, there was a 19% increase in the number of injured occupants of other vehicles involved in large-truck traffic crashes.
