Over 100 People Injured When LIRR Train Crashes

According to a news report by the New York Post, a Long Island Rail Road train running late crashed into Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal causing it to be thrown off the tracks by the impact during rush hour on Wednesday morning. 103 people were injured.

About the Long Island Rail Road Accident

Several witnesses and victims came forward with their own statements on the accident.

Raj, 45, a Queens resident said she noticed the train was going “a little faster” as it approached the station near the Barclays Center. She said, “We’re standing there, and then it was a crash. We started falling on each other.”

Wendy Gerzog, 57, from Lawrence, LI​,​ was in the first car of the train when she was toppled over by the other victims of crash who had fallen on top of her. She said, “All of a sudden it was just like boom. I was at the bottom of the pile. Everyone was screaming. It was scary.”

Steve Miller, 46, a Park Slope resident, was just across the platform on Track 5 waiting to catch a train into Long Island when the crash occurred. He said, “It was like a crashing sound – like a really loud car crash. The train hit the end and came off the tracks. There was a screeching and the station quickly filled with dust and smoke.”

Aftermath of the Terrifying Crash

The victims were transported to Kings County Hospital, New York Methodist Hospital and Brooklyn Hospital for treatment.

New York City Governor Cuomo and MTA Chairman Tom Pendergrast say an investigation into the crash has officially begun. The National Transportation Safety Board has begun sending investigators to the scene of the accident.

The cause of the crash is still unknown.
