Pennsylvania State Trooper Killed in Ligonier Crash

A Pennsylvania State Trooper is dead following a two-vehicle accident that occurred in Ligonier early Friday morning.

Details of the Fatal Accident

According to WPXI, the fatal crash happened around 2:30 am; however, authorities have not said how the crash occurred.

The accident claimed the life of state trooper Michael P. Stewart, 26. A second trooper who has not been identified was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The police SUV appeared to have collided with a garbage truck, but the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

  • 35,092 people were killed in traffic crashes in the U.S. in 2015. This marked a 7.2-percent increase over the 32,744 deaths recorded in 2014 – the largest percentage increase recorded since 1966.
  • Of those killed in traffic accidents in 2015:
    • 22,441 were occupants of passenger vehicles
    • 5,376 were pedestrians
    • 4,976 were motorcyclists (operators and passengers)
    • 818 were pedalcyclists
    • 667 were occupants of large trucks
    • 227 were listed as other or as unknown
  • An additional 2,443,000 people were injured in traffic accidents in 2015.
