Safety Tips for Using Electric Scooters

Rebecca Ramsey5 months ago

Electric scooters can be a fun transportation option, but they can also be dangerous if riders are not paying attention to what they are doing. Follow the tips listed in this article to increase your safety on a scooter.

Study on Electric Scooter Risks

In 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) partnered with the Public Health and Transportation departments in Austin, Texas, to perform a study on scooter use and risk factors associated with injuries.

For the study, they analyzed 936,110 e-scooter trips between Sept. 5, 2018 and Nov. 30, 2018 and documented their findings. During the study, there were 271 people involved in some type of e-scooter incident that resulted in an injury. The CDC confirmed 130 such cases, amounting to an injury rate of 14.3 per 100,000 trips.

Nearly half of those hurt in e-scooter crashes sustained head injuries, 15 percent of which were traumatic. The CDC said less than one percent of the riders it studied wore helmets.

Tips to Increase Scooter Safety

  • Wear a Helmet – Head traumas such as brain bleeds and concussions make up 45% of all reported injuries incurred from scooter accidents, according to the CDC. Many of these injuries happen because riders fail to wear a helmet.
  • Don’t Drink and Scoot – Alcohol slows reflexes and impairs judgement. Riding a scooter after you have been drinking is as dangerous as driving, and you can still get a DUI.
  • Ride Solo – Riding with a passenger is dangerous to both of you. The extra weight can make the scooter unbalanced and harder to control. Most scooters have a weight limit of around 220 pounds.
  • Pay Attention – In a CDC study, 10% of injured riders collided with a car, another 10% hit a curb, and 7% ran into an inanimate object, like a light pole. Stay focused on where you are going, and never use your phone while riding.
  • Follow the Rules – Scooter regulations vary in each city. It’s up to you to learn and obey the rules. Remember to wear reflective clothing and to use hand signals.
  • Check Scooter for Defects – A visual inspection and break test before you begin riding can protect you from malfunctions and glitches on the road. If you detect issues, contact customer service and get another scooter.
