A family of seven people in a Toyota Sienna minivan traveled home to Plano, Texas, on Interstate 44 at approximately 4:00 a.m. when the accident occurred. A man in a car driving east in the westbound lanes of the interstate struck the front of the family’s minivan.
Officials report that 32-year-old Sushma Settipalli and her son, Mahidhar, died at the scene of the crash. The third fatality was the wrong-way driver, identified as Robert Bastson.
WFAA reports that all of the minivan passengers had their seatbelts on at the time of the wreck. Ratnakur Settipalli and his four-year-old daughter sustained serious injuries and received treatment at a local hospital.
Three other family members suffered from injuries, two of which required hospitalization, according to WFAA. The seven family members spent the Thanksgiving holiday with family in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and were on their return trip back to Plano when the fatal accident occurred.
