Trick-or-Treating Tips for a Safe Halloween

For most people, October brings with it a flourish of cooler weather and the hunger for candy. While preparing for your trick-or-treating adventure, keep the following tips in mind to make sure your Halloween experience is fun and safe.

Halloween Costume Precautions

Before heading out the door, check the following details of your child’s costume:

  • Shoes – Make sure your children’s shoes are comfortable. Also, double tie all shoelaces to avoid tripping in the dark.
  • Length – Long costumes can drag on the ground and become a tripping hazard. Hem any costume that is too long.
  • Masks – Masks can make breathing and seeing difficult. The better choice is applying non-toxic makeup to complete the look.
  • Props – Make sure any props are light, easy to carry, and safe. Check for sharp edges that could cause harm if the child were to trip.
  • Lighting – If your children’s costumes are too dark, drivers will have difficulty spotting them on the road. Make sure to apply something reflective or bright to dark costumes, and have your children carry flashlights with them.

General Halloween Safety

As you or your children head out for a fun night of trick-or-treating, keep in mind these general safety tips:

  • Use the Buddy System – Children younger than 12 should be accompanied by an adult. If older children are trick-or-treating without an adult’s supervision, make sure they will be with a group of several friends for the entire night.
  • Use Sidewalks – Children should be reminded to stick to the sidewalks as they travel house to house, to look both ways before crossing the street, and to use crosswalks on busier roads.
  • Avoid Unlit Houses – If the house is dark, the owners are either not home or they do not wish to be disturbed. Respect their privacy and proceed to the next house.
  • Check the Candy – Discourage your children from eating any candies until you have a chance to sort through them. Throw away any candy that is not in its original wrapper or looks like it has been opened. Also, be sure to remove any candies that threaten an allergic reaction.
