The workplace accident occurred at the Metzler Bros. LLC trucking company located at 709 Second Ave at around 1:20 p.m. local time. Emergency crews responded to an explosion at the business and found a man trapped inside a fuel tank.
Fire officials say two employees were cleaning the gas tank, used to haul fuel, when they were injured by an explosion. The Altoona Mirror reports that one of the workers then fell three-to-four feet into the tank. It is unclear how the second worker was injured. The trucking company employees were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Initially, fire officials were unsure that an explosion had even occurred at the business. According to the Altoona Mirror, it was later confirmed that an explosion went off. Residents and workers nearby said they heard a loud bang at around the time of the workplace accident.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be launching an investigation into the accident. A spokeswoman said the trucking company had no previous history with OSHA.
